Bringing our A-Game for this 4-hour tour, which delivers a first class, barra bonanza of an experience, including lunch at the Hook-A-Barra kitchen. Be collected from Port Douglas in our Barramobile [3 departure times, see below] and enjoy interpretive commentary on your way to Wonga Beach. This includes a Welcome to Country and stops at culturally significant sites. Headed through the farm gate, it’s straight into a private tour of the Daintree Saltwater Barramundi Farm, which has been producing award winning barra for more than 10 years.
Check out the baby barra ponds and growing ponds, learn about our sustainable farm practices and see our team doing a hand harvest. Then it’s your turn, with 1 hour of fishing at the big Barra Pond, home to tones of barra, including 1m monsters, albino and speckled barramundi. Our crew are there to help with top tips and providing assistance for the catch and release. Then it’s time to temp the taste buds – lunch is included in our Port Douglas tour, choose between a fresh barra burger or classic fish and chips. These 4 hour tours run Monday to Saturday (not Sunday), with pick-ups from Port Douglas at 9.45am, 11.15am and 12.45pm. Note: If you don’t want to do the Farm Tour, which is highly recommended, then there’s the option for 2 hours of barra fishing. The Port Douglas tour with lunch operates 3 times a day, 6 days a week (Monday to Saturday – not Sunday). They are 4 hour tours, from pick-up to drop-off in Port Douglas. Approximate times below.
It is recommended you wear a hat and long-sleeved sun shirt, with appropriate sun protection. Comfortable walking shoes are also recommended.
Everything you need for catch and release barramundi fishing is provided and included in the tour price. Hook-a-Barra has a huge range of quality gear, including a specialist selection of lures, with everything from hard bodied minnows to soft plastics, poppers and paddle tails. We even have a fly-fishing option for expert anglers. Please note we prefer to not allow personal rods and tackle to be used in our ponds, because they create a bio-security risk to our entire farm.
Yes. Our passionate and knowledgeable crew provide guidance and tuition on all our equipment. The fishing component of our Port Douglas tour includes an introduction to barra fishing, rod and tackle setup and the assistance of our expert fishing guides around the pond. We’re sure you’re up to the challenge, but if you have any questions feel free to ask our friendly staff.
There is the option to take your catch home, but this is charged above and beyond the tour price. We charge $17.50 per kilo and can provide ice and eskis to take your fish home. Ask us about some delicious fresh fillets and recipe cards.
There is a viewing tank, where you can see some of our rare Speckled (Panda), Albino and Golden Barramundi – as a part of your tour, our crew will demonstrate their feeding techniques here. You will have lunch from the Hook-A-Barra Kitchen, either a fresh Barra Burger or classic fish and chips. Cold drinks are available to purchase, as is a unique selection of barramundi souvenirs and merchandise. There are toilet facilities for guests.
