BARRA DAY 2023

National Barramundi Day is held on October 20 every year and Daintree Saltwater Barramundi is always proud to be a part of the celebrations.

One of the goals of this year’s National Barramundi Day is to raise awareness about the Australian government’s proposed changes to labelling laws for seafood, which would require seafood to be identified as either Australian, imported or mixed.

One of the 2023 Ambassdor’s for National Barramundi Day, illustrious chef Dan Hong, is behind this move and said that Australian barramundi was the best in the world and consumers should know where their fish is coming from.

“Barramundi is arguably Australia’s national fish … Aussie barramundi is the best in the world. It’s the sweetest and cleanest tasting. Obviously, it’s the most sustainable because it’s grown here and not flown over, but it really is the best tasting because of how clean our waters are and how amazing the farming process is here.” – Dan Hong

“Because barramundi is such an iconic fish, a lot of fish’n’chip shops and seafood restaurants will have it on the menu … But they’re not using Australian barramundi. They’re banking on the reputation of barra, but then they’re using imported barra. If you’re unsure, it’s okay to just ask if the barramundi is local.” – Dan Hong

Daintree Saltwater Barramundi & Harrisons Restaurant Port Douglas

Spencer Patrick of Harrisons Restaurant in Port Douglas, joined chefs and restaurants across the country by participating in National Barramundi Day, using produce from Daintree Saltwater Barramundi.

“Barramundi ticks all the boxes… It’s incredibly versatile, sweet, clean and of course sustainable. This iconic Australian fish has been on my menus at Harrisons for the last 15 years,” said Chef/Owner Spencer Patrick.

By choosing Australian-farmed barramundi reared through responsible methods and supporting local fisheries, Australians can play a pivotal role in ensuring the enduring presence of this cherished fish in our culinary heritage.

We ask all consumers to make a sustainable choice by purchasing farmed Australian barramundi. In doing so you are supporting Australian farmers and the environment, with Aussie barra. By asking for Aussie barra, you’re not only supporting our hard-working farmers, but also ensuring that you’re getting the freshest, tastiest fish.
